Tarot Series

This Tarot Series of paintings arose from twin founts of inspiration - my childhood obsession with flowers and my observation of people increasingly searching for answers via spiritual tools like astrology and tarot.

Each of these 22 paintings represents one of the cards of the tarot’s Major Arcana. I match my interpretations of each card’s meaning with a flower or plant, as translated through the “language of flowers”. This research draws from sources as diverse as the Victorian era, mythological antiquity, Japanese poetry, and American folk legend.

For example, the first card of the Major Arcana, The Fool, is meant to indicate beginner’s luck and improvisation. I illustrate it using the crocus, whose early appearance in spring is thought to mean, “I hope, but I’m afraid.”

This series aims to show ways in which flowers (both familiar and unfamiliar) can serve as beautiful symbols to help people clarify their own thoughts, or to serve as a totem for themes of which they want to remain mindful in their daily routines.

With the help of my creative partner, designer Natalie Soud, I’ve designed and published the 22 tarot cards that draw upon these paintings - find out more at The Garden Journey. I look forward to inviting people to actually use these tarot cards as part of a meditative ritual as intimate as bending down to smell a flower in the wild.
